Dimitrios Kannavos 1. Judy, you have built your career both as an actress and a producer. How did your journey in the film industry begin, and what were the key moments that shaped you as an artist?

Judy Karman: It all started in my childhood in San Diego, California, when my father introduced me to the world of cinema, plays, musical theatre, and dance lessons. All of that shaped my spirit and stayed with me through the years. The key moments came later in life, after working, traveling, training, and dealing with many different people. Creativity led me to find new ways to help people engage, learn, and succeed. I felt there was more out there for me to do and be part of. I realized my heart was still in cinema. I made that choice later in life, and it brought me to where I am today.

Dimitrios Kannavos 2. You are involved with Dream Cinema Productions and various international projects. What attracts you most when choosing a script or a film to work on?

Judy Karman: Of course, there is a group of us who review scripts, led by Rayster Michaels. It’s a tough question. Sometimes it’s a genre that you can immediately see appealing to a worldwide audience. I’m also drawn to scripts based on major events or important moments in history.

Dimitrios Kannavos 3. Hollywood is a highly competitive environment. What personal values have helped you stay focused and authentic in this industry?

Judy Karman: Honestly, for me it all comes from my upbringing and maintaining my core values. Respect and staying true to yourself. My past business background helped a lot, as did being flexible and able to adapt. It’s important to find a balance between the industry and a separate personal life outside of work. I firmly believe we are all part of something bigger than ourselves.

Dimitrios Kannavos 4. International collaborations are becoming increasingly important in cinema. What is your view on partnerships between Hollywood and European creators, especially from Greece and Cyprus?

Judy Karman: I’m very passionate about culture and grew up surrounded by it. I thrive on that, and I often discover how much we all truly have in common. I’ve been fortunate, for many years, to connect with people all over the world. Together, we can make a difference.

Dimitrios Kannavos 5. As a woman in film, what challenges have you faced, and how important are organizations like WIFT in supporting female voices in cinema?

Judy Karman: I really try to see people as individuals, especially in a professional environment. Ego is a big thing, and this industry can reflect a lot of emotional reactions. It’s not easy, but often it’s about them, not you. On a personal level, more than one person has told my CEO that they should get rid of me. Sometimes they’re meaningless threats. Support is essential to me, and having people to talk to who can offer another perspective helps a lot. Competitiveness can become personal. Having grounded support to work with, and creating actions that allow voices to be heard fairly, is crucial.

Dimitrios Kannavos 6. You have participated in film festivals and premieres around the world. How do festivals influence an actor’s career and the life of a film?

Judy Karman: It’s about taking full advantage of being at a festival. Of course, they must follow the requirements set by the studio or production company. The fact that media attention on the film is going out worldwide means you must be professional at all times. An actor needs to be visible and understand the importance of connecting and networking with other industry professionals attending the festival.

Dimitrios Kannavos 7. What kind of roles inspire you the most—strong dramatic characters, action heroines, or real-life personalities?

Judy Karman: I like roles that keep me engaged or that can make me laugh. Even both. I guess what I’m really saying is that I like to feel a connection.

Dimitrios Kannavos 8. If you could collaborate with a Greek or Cypriot director, what kind of story would you love to bring to the screen?

Judy Karman: A story that can immerse the culture within the narrative. It could be an action film or a combination of human emotions and a true story.

Dimitrios Kannavos 9. What advice would you give to young actors from Greece who dream of working in Los Angeles and entering the international market?

Judy Karman: Keep working and building your craft. Network as much as possible and stay updated on what’s happening in the industry. If possible, build a network that can help you understand how to navigate the U.S. side of the industry.

Dimitrios Kannavos 10. Looking to the future, what are your next goals as an actress and producer, and how would you like to contribute to the global film community?

Judy Karman: My goals as a producer are focused on Dream Cinema Productions and the group of projects we have lined up, which also include acting. Additional acting projects will be considered in the future. Another goal I have is to reach and engage international markets as a speaker.

Dimitrios Kannavos 1. Judy, hai costruito la tua carriera sia come attrice che come produttrice.

Come è iniziato il tuo percorso nell’industria cinematografica e quali sono stati i momenti chiave che ti hanno formata come artista?

Judy Karman: Tutto è iniziato durante l’infanzia a San Diego, in California, quando mio padre mi ha introdotto al mondo del cinema, degli spettacoli teatrali, del musical e delle lezioni di danza. Tutto questo ha costruito il mio spirito, che mi ha accompagnata negli anni. I momenti chiave sono arrivati più tardi nella vita, dopo aver lavorato, viaggiato, studiato e dopo aver avuto a che fare con molte persone. La creatività mi ha portata a trovare nuovi modi per aiutare le persone a coinvolgersi, imparare e avere successo. Sentivo che c’era qualcosa di più che potevo fare e di cui potevo far parte. Ho riconosciuto che il mio cuore era ancora nel cinema. Ho fatto quella scelta più avanti negli anni, ed è ciò che mi ha portata fin qui.

Dimitrios Kannavos 2. Sei coinvolta con Dream Cinema Productions e in vari progetti internazionali.

Che cosa ti attrae maggiormente quando scegli una sceneggiatura o un film su cui lavorare?

Judy Karman: Ovviamente c’è un gruppo di noi che valuta le sceneggiature, guidato da Rayster Michaels. È una domanda difficile. A volte è un genere che puoi immaginare raggiungere immediatamente un pubblico mondiale. Sono anche attratta dalle sceneggiature basate su grandi eventi o periodi storici importanti.

Dimitrios Kannavos 3. Hollywood è un ambiente altamente competitivo.

Quali valori personali ti hanno aiutata a rimanere concentrata e autentica in questa industria?

Judy Karman: Onestamente, per me tutto deriva dalla mia educazione e dal mantenere i miei valori fondamentali. Rispetto e autenticità. Anche il mio passato nel mondo del business mi ha aiutata molto, così come la capacità di adattarmi. È importante trovare un equilibrio tra l’industria e una vita personale separata dal lavoro. Credo fermamente che tutti facciamo parte di qualcosa di più grande di noi stessi.

 Dimitrios Kannavos 4. Attraverso l’Hellenic Los Angeles Network vogliamo connettere culture diverse.

Qual è la tua opinione sulle collaborazioni internazionali tra Hollywood e i creatori europei, in particolare di Grecia e Cipro?

Judy Karman: Amo profondamente la cultura e sono cresciuta circondata da essa. Ci prospero, e spesso scopro quanto abbiamo davvero in comune. Sono stata fortunata, per molti anni, a connettermi con persone di tutto il mondo. Insieme possiamo fare la differenza.

 Dimitrios Kannavos 5. Come donna nel cinema, quali sfide hai affrontato e quanto sono importanti organizzazioni come WIFT nel sostenere le voci femminili?

Judy Karman: Cerco davvero di vedere le persone come individui, soprattutto in un contesto professionale. Gli ego sono una cosa importante, e questa industria può riflettere molte reazioni emotive. Non è facile, ma spesso si tratta di loro, non di te.

A livello personale, più di una persona ha detto al mio CEO che dovrebbero liberarsi di me. A volte sono minacce senza senso.

Per me il supporto è fondamentale, e avere persone con cui parlare che possano offrire un’altra prospettiva aiuta molto. La competitività può diventare personale. Avere un sostegno solido con cui lavorare e creare azioni che permettano alle voci di essere ascoltate in modo equo è essenziale.

Dimitrios Kannavos 6. Hai partecipato a festival e première in tutto il mondo.

In che modo i festival influenzano la carriera di un attore e la vita di un film?

Judy Karman: Si tratta di sfruttare al massimo la presenza a un festival. Ovviamente devono seguire i requisiti stabiliti dallo studio o dalla casa di produzione. Il fatto che i media e l’attenzione sul film vengano diffusi a livello mondiale significa che bisogna essere professionali in ogni momento. Un attore deve essere visibile e riconoscere l’importanza di connettersi e fare networking con altri professionisti del settore presenti al festival.

Dimitrios Kannavos 7. Che tipo di ruoli ti ispirano di più: personaggi drammatici, eroine d’azione o figure reali?

Judy Karman: Mi piacciono i ruoli che mi tengono coinvolta o che riescono a farmi ridere. Anche entrambi! Credo che ciò che sto davvero dicendo è che mi piace sentire una connessione.

Dimitrios Kannavos 8. Se potessi collaborare con un regista greco o cipriota, che tipo di storia ti piacerebbe portare sullo schermo?

Judy Karman: Una storia che possa immergere la cultura all’interno della narrazione. Potrebbe essere un film d’azione o una combinazione di emozioni umane e una storia vera.

Dimitrios Kannavos 9. Che consiglio daresti ai giovani attori greci che sognano di lavorare a Los Angeles e entrare nel mercato internazionale?

Judy Karman: Continuate a lavorare e a costruire la vostra arte. Fate networking il più possibile e rimanete aggiornati su ciò che accade nell’industria. Se possibile, create una rete che vi aiuti a comprendere come muovervi nel settore statunitense.

Dimitrios Kannavos 10. Guardando al futuro, quali sono i tuoi prossimi obiettivi come attrice e produttrice, e come vorresti contribuire alla comunità cinematografica globale?

Judy Karman: I miei obiettivi come produttrice riguardano Dream Cinema Productions e l’insieme dei progetti che abbiamo in programma, che includono anche la recitazione. Ulteriori ruoli come attrice saranno presi in considerazione in futuro. Un altro obiettivo che ho è raggiungere e coinvolgere i mercati internazionali come speaker.
