Nato il 6 luglio 1968 a Kalahandi, Odisha, India, il Dr. Bhawani Shankar Nial è un poeta di fama internazionale, conosciuto per il suo approccio innovativo alla poesia. Oltre al suo contributo come poeta, ha operato come editore, pensatore e attivista per i diritti umani, lavorando intensamente in tutta l’India. Il Dr. Nial ha avuto un ruolo chiave in numerose organizzazioni nazionali, ha fondato diverse realtà sociali, politiche e culturali, ed è stato leader di vari movimenti popolari volti a promuovere lo sviluppo sostenibile e la democrazia partecipativa.

Il recente lancio dei libri del Dr. Bhawani Shankar Nial presso il Raj Bhavan Odisha, dove le sue due raccolte in inglese, Lockdown e An Encounter with Death, sono state inaugurate da Sua Eccellenza il Governatore dell’Odisha, Prof. Ganeshi Lal, ha ricevuto ampi messaggi di congratulazioni dalla comunità letteraria di Kalahandi. Il Governatore ha espresso apprezzamento per l’elevata qualità delle opere, augurando al Dr. Nial un proseguimento fruttuoso del suo percorso creativo.

Quando ho pianto l’ultima volta?
Non so nulla
di come voli via
attraverso la mia finestra a Est
mentre ero
assorto nel mio destino.
Sono preso
a consumarmi
nel nome
della fama e delle celebrazioni.
Ma con mia grande sorpresa
non l’ho più visto
e non era più
nel mio pugno,
eppure sento
che è qui in me,
nel mio mondo, davvero
è qui
in ogni mio su e giù,
in ogni direzione.
La sua presenza
abbonda forse in me.
Ma non sono riuscito a trovarlo
nonostante una ricerca accurata.
Ora non ricordo più
quando ho pianto l’ultima volta,
in quale tramonto
e in quale secolo.
LE PAROLE SONO DESTINATE A MORIRE
A volte succede
proprio così
che le parole
che germogliano nel giardino
di mia figlia
diffondano il verde nella letteratura,
oppure
portino un gelo amaro
nell’aria,
oppure
muovano un cambiamento
contro decisioni
antidemocratiche del Governo,
oppure
portino carestie e
distruggano ricchezze
accumulate nei secoli.
È naturale
che le parole
possano cambiare le stagioni.
Ma
a volte anche le parole
si suicidano e muoiono
quando non trovano
ossigeno, come gli esseri umani,
quando la loro gente
non prova più
alcun legame,
o quasi.

LA TERRA DELL’OCCHIO E IO
Non è stato facile
liberarsi
dalla terra nel suo occhio
dove affondavano
grandi cascate,
foreste profonde,
scogliere e isole,
cieli blu, laghi nascosti
e rugiada
sull’erba del mattino.
Certo,
non era facile
lasciare i nemici e gli amici
familiari,
gli dèi e i demoni,
e perfino gli alieni.
Anche se sono riuscito
a fuggire dal suo occhio
e dalla terra che conteneva,
vi ho lasciato
le esperienze orribili
delle guerre,
le storie riuscite
d’amore
e l’arte di vivere
con poco.
Sono anche lontano
dal silenzio
che mi conduce
alla salvezza.

Born on July 6th, 1968, in Kalahandi, Odisha, India, Dr. Bhawani Shankar Nial is an internationally acclaimed poet known for his innovative approach to poetry. Alongside his contributions as a poet, he has served as an editor, thinker, and human rights activist, working extensively throughout India. I know nothing
how it flies away
through my East Window
when I was
busy with my lot.
I am busy in using
myself in the name of
fame and felicitations.
But to my utter surprise
he was not seen and not
in my fist any more,
but I feel
he is here in me,
in my world very much
he is here
in all my ups and downs
in all directions.
His presence abounds
in me perhaps.
But I could not find him
after a thorough search
Now I couldn’t remember
when I cried last
in which sunset and
in which century.

Sometimes it happens
like this
that the words that
crops-up in the garden
of my daughter ladels out
greenery in literature,
or
brings a bitter cold
in the environment
or
brings a change against
the undemocratic decision
of the Government
or
brings famine and
destroys all the possessions
of centuries.
It’s quite natural that
words may bring changes
in seasons
but
sometimes the words too
commit suicide and die
when they do not
get oxygen like human beings
when their own people
do not have any bonding
more or less.

EYE’S EARTH AND I

It was not so easy
to free oneself
from the earth in her eye
where there sunk
the great water falls,
the deep woods,
the cliffs and islands
blue skies, concealed
lakes and dews
on the morning grass.
Of course
it was not so easy
to leave the familiar
foes and friends,
Gods and demons
and even the aliens.
Though I’m able to
escape from her eye
and the earth in it
I left there
the horrible experiences
of the wars,
the successful stories
of love and
the art of living
with a meagre income.
I’m also away from
the silence that
leads me to salvation.
